Climate Expo & Sustainability Conference 2024: A Day of Inspiration and Action

Last Friday, the Uttoxeter Racecourse buzzed with energy and optimism as it hosted the highly anticipated Midlands Climate Expo & Sustainability Conference 2024. Organised by The Globe Group CIC, this landmark event brought together over 500 attendees, including sustainability advocates, industry leaders, local businesses, and community members, all united by a shared commitment to combat climate change. Supported by key sponsors including TMT First, Keele University, GivEnergy, and EVC Solutions, the conference proved to be an inspiring and informative day dedicated to exploring sustainable solutions and driving positive environmental action.

A Day of Powerful Keynotes and Inspiring Insights

The conference featured a stellar line-up of keynote speakers who captivated the audience with their insights and personal experiences. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, renowned food writer, broadcaster, and sustainability champion, took to the stage to deliver a thought-provoking keynote that was as entertaining as it was enlightening. Speaking passionately about how we use resources—from food waste to the innovative, unexpected potential of bamboo underpants—Hugh challenged attendees to rethink their consumption habits and embrace more sustainable choices.

“We must reconsider how we use our resources, whether it’s the food on our plates or the materials we choose for our everyday lives,” Hugh urged. “Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a necessity. We have the power to make choices that protect our planet for future generations.”

Following Hugh, beloved TV presenter and wildlife enthusiast Michaela Strachan shared her first-hand experiences of humanity’s impact on the natural world. Drawing on her extensive career in environmental television, Michaela highlighted both the challenges and opportunities facing our planet:

“Our planet can be resilient to huge climatic shifts, the big question is, can we? I believe that if we use our minds, our will, our technology, and our common sense, we can give it our best shot! Our biggest enemy is indifference.”

Michaela’s message resonated deeply with the audience, underscoring the importance of individual and collective action in the fight against climate change.

Launching the COP Charter: A Regional Commitment to Climate Action

One of the highlights of the conference was the official launch of the Staffordshire & Stoke-On-Trent COP Charter. Introduced by Mr Ian Dudson CBE, the Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire, the Charter represents a collective commitment by local organisations, businesses, and communities to tackle climate challenges together. The Charter sets out a shared vision to reduce carbon emissions, promote sustainable practices, and enhance the resilience of the region against climate impacts.

Mr Dudson’s passionate address underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in driving meaningful change, emphasising that “the COP Charter is more than a document; it is a pledge—a unified statement of intent” that will serve as a guiding framework for the region’s sustainability journey. With several organisations already signed up, the launch was a powerful reminder of the critical role local action plays in addressing global environmental challenges.

Workshops, Panels, and Networking: A Hub of Learning and Engagement

The conference featured a range of engaging workshops, each offering unique insights and practical advice for attendees. Highlights included:

  • Doughnut Economics, led by The Globe Group CIC, introduced participants to the revolutionary economic model that balances human needs with the planet’s ecological limits, challenging traditional growth-focused mindsets.
  • Climate Risks to Business, led by Positive Planet, explored the growing financial and operational risks that climate change poses to businesses and provided strategies to help organisations adapt and thrive in a changing climate.
  • Taking Action for Nature and Climate, led by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, focused on the interconnectedness of nature conservation and climate action, encouraging attendees to consider how protecting biodiversity can also help combat climate change.

In addition to the workshops, the event featured two dynamic networking sessions: one led by Women in Sustainability, which fostered connections among female professionals committed to green careers, and another led by the Staffordshire & Stoke-On-Trent Climate Commission, offering a platform for stakeholders to discuss regional climate strategies and opportunities for collaboration.

Exhibitors and Panels: Showcasing Innovation and Best Practices

The exhibitor hall was bustling throughout the day, showcasing a diverse array of businesses and organisations committed to sustainability. From cutting-edge technology solutions to innovative eco-products, exhibitors demonstrated the latest in sustainable advancements, sparking inspiration and collaboration among attendees.

Alongside that further Panel discussions covered a wide range of topics in the main Speaker Hall, from the future of EV technology to green communication practices, with expert speakers sharing insights and practical tips. These sessions provided attendees with a wealth of knowledge and sparked conversations about how we can all contribute to a more sustainable future.

Looking Ahead

As the day drew to a close, there was a palpable sense of momentum and hope in the air. The Climate Expo & Sustainability Conference 2024 not only highlighted the urgent need for action but also showcased the innovative solutions and inspiring individuals leading the charge. The launch of the COP Charter stands as a significant step forward, providing a clear roadmap for regional climate action.

For those who attended, the event was a call to action—a reminder that every step, no matter how small, contributes to the larger goal of a sustainable future. Whether inspired by Hugh’s passionate plea for resourcefulness or Michaela’s stories of nature’s resilience, attendees left with a renewed commitment to making a difference.

The Globe Group CIC extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended, spoke, sponsored and exhibited at the event. Together, we are building a brighter, greener future for Staffordshire, Stoke-On-Trent, and beyond. Stay tuned for next year’s conference as we continue this important work, and let’s keep the conversation—and the action—going!
